Terrestrial Leica scans carry survey-grade geometry, which makes them the right input wherever the map has to agree with a coordinate system that already exists. If the site has surveyed control points, they georeference the map rather than competing with it: the control points fix the map to the world, and the VPS fixes the device to the map.

How many stations does a good map need?

Fewer than most people expect, but placed for overlap rather than for coverage on paper. Gaps between stations are the most common cause of a map that localizes in some places and fails in others, and they do not show up in a rendered preview. Plan the walk for how the map will be queried, not just for what needs documenting.
